California State Parks hosts a series of virtual and in-person regional workshops focused on a broad overview of California’s natural resources, climate literacy, and science communication skills. Led by State Parks and regional experts, this training brings together park interpreters and educators from across the state.
Training Goal
Participants will strengthen knowledge of California natural resources, climate communication best practices, and inquiry-based interpretive techniques to spark curiosity and promote stewardship of park lands.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, participants will have the opportunity to:
Strengthen their understanding of regional climate impacts and adaptation strategies through interactive place-based discussions with regional experts.
Build confidence in interpreting both basic and complex environmental stories in engaging ways through observation and direct practice incorporating hands-on activities and inquiry-based techniques adapted from NNOCCI and BEETLES.
Network with peers to share knowledge and expertise for crafting high quality interpretive programs that inspire stewardship and collective climate action.
Utilize an NRI toolkit and template to draft an agenda for a locally-relevant climate & environmental literacy workshop with their park's and/or district’s staff, volunteers, and partners.
Training Components
To receive full credit for this 32-hour course, participants must complete the following:
Online Training: 12 hours of interactive Zoom-based training
Regional Workshop: 16 hours of in-person training and interpretive practice in the field
Local Workshop: 4 hours of facilitating park/district-specific training to other staff, volunteers, or partners tasked with educating the public about state park natural resources (staff are encouraged team up to co-facilitate local workshops)
