Transformation Unit

Week 2

Essential Question: What is transformation and how do things change?

Focus Question: What kinds of changes happen in nature?/ How will I continue to grow?

Story Time: Scroll down for the Books of the Week

Choose one book each day to focus on

Scroll down for the Books of the Week. Pause during the book reading to discuss what you see and ask your child to identify items either by labeling or pointing. Keep a list of what they were able to identify and share it with us!

After reading the books/watching the videos, go on a neighborhood walk (even if it's just around the block) and talk about the people and animals you see. Talk about the sounds you hear (ie children playing, dogs barking, baby crying). Create a list of your child's discoveries or take pictures (using camera, smart phone, tablet) so you can talk more about it when you get home.

Literacy Activity:

Choose an activity to work on over a couple of days or choose one activity per day

Vocabulary words to target this week: cycle, change, grow, seasons, transform

EXAGGERATE the target letters below and pair those sounds with the vocabulary words

(Focus Letters: C, G, S, T)

*Feel free to add your own words, the key is consistency. KEEP LANGUAGE GOING ALL DAY*

There are puzzles, tracing, painting, play-dough mats to choose from. The goal is to have your child engage with letters of the alphabet but also to be able to identify the letters in the vocabulary words. Experiment with what your child shows the most interest in. Target fine motor skills, following directions and communication. Allow your child to use glue, safety scissors, paint, markers, stickers, etc. For play-dough and paint recipes, click on the link below or check our "Resources" page.

NO PRINTER? NO PROBLEM! DRAW LETTERS FOR YOUR CHILD TO TRACE WITH THEIR FINGERS, MARKER, ETC

STEAM:

Science/ Technology/ Engineering/ Art/ Math/ Science

Choose an activity to work on over a couple of days or choose one activity per day

Examples of questions to ask:

What happens when ___? How do you think that works? How could you change that?

What does that remind you of? What would happen if ___? Tell me more.

Narrate play and ask questions, label objects, animals body parts, verbs, colors, sizes, quantity, be creative and HAVE FUN!

  1. POPCORN KERNAL ACTIVITY: Make popcorn with your child! Show them the popcorn kernels in advance and talk about how the kernels change when heated. Count the popcorn kernels and popcorn. Challenge: Create a pattern with the kernels and popped corn.

Remember to look at the videos posted below to see a kernel pop in SUPER SLOW MOTION

Added Bonus Activity: Check out the link below to make RAINBOW POPCORN! Then cuddle up with your favorite movie!

  1. INVISIBLE INK: Supply a white crayon as well as white paper and a highlighter. Invite children to write with the white crayon on the white paper. Encourage them to press hard with the crayon. After children have created a picture or message with the white crayon invite them to color over their work with a highlighter or watercolor paint. What happens? What changes do they notice?

Challenges: Literacy: Have your child write their name and uncover it later! Social Emotional: Draw a variety of emotions (ie happy/ sad/ silly) and have your child identify by point or label the emotions they uncover. Math: Create patterns using shapes or write numerals and have your child predict what shape comes next or label the next numeral
  1. MELT IN THE SUN: Place a variety of items in a muffin tin or in several small bowls or containers. Select some items that will melt when left in the sun and some that will not. Items that might melt in the sun include crayons, ice cubes and marshmallows. Ask children how long they think it would take for the items to melt. An hour? A day? Why?

As a variation, place items in a muffin tin and then put in the freezer! What transformed? What stayed the same in the sun AND freezer?
  1. Transformation Science Challenge: Does it change?: Provide an assortment of materials for children to try to mix together such as oil and vinegar, flour and water, food coloring and water. Invite children to predict what will happen when they combine the materials. Once they mix materials, ask them to reflect on their predictions and what occurs. Do the materials change? How? Perhaps you can make your own sensory/ calm down bottle (check out the tutorial below).

Books of the Week

Once finished with the book, go through it again and PAUSE video to get a better look at pictures; assist your child to identify pictures (focus on vocabulary words, body parts, verbs, colors, quantity).

Use this as an opportunity to continue to talk about the life cycle of animals and how the seasons change.

Again, PAUSE the books at any time to answer questions, ASK questions, and point out important information. At the end of the book, talk about it some more. Ask WH questions (ie WHAT did we just read?/ WHERE did the children go?)

And Then Comes Summer by Tom Brenner: Changes Due to Weather: Ask your child how different types of weather may change things seen outside their windows or when they go on nature walks. For example, if there is a puddle in the space ask your child to consider how the puddle might change if it becomes very cold outside or if it becomes very sunny and warm. Alternatively ask children to consider how everything in the outdoor space can change if it rains, snows, etc

I See Summer by Charles Ghigna: Talk about the elements of summer. The weather gets warmer, the sun comes out and stays out longer. Ask your child if they remember any other changes in weather? How is the weather different now than it was during the winter? What other changes will be happening now that summer is coming? *Refer to "What's the Weather" song.

**For Students Transitioning to Kindergarten:

Kindergarten, Here We Come! by Quinlan B. Lee: For children who will be attending kindergarten. Talk with your child about the changes, going to a new school, new teachers, new building and making new friends! **If possible, visit your new school's building (walk or drive by), or visit the school's website and take a virtual tour; look at pictures of the staff and any pictures of students engaging on play.

Videos of the Week/ Music and Movement

When exploring these videos, use this as an opportunity to talk with your child about transformation; how one thing can change into another. See if your child can identify the objects in videos and imitate the dance and exercise movements.

It's important to narrate these videos and PAUSE video if you need to. Try out some or all of the experiments! Write down any reactions or words and share with us! As always, pictures are always welcomed too!

The goal here is to HAVE FUN! Making noise is okay, it's all part of the learning process!
