Research

Research interests

I started my research career with an interest in probability theory and statistics. During my MSc degree I studied multi-state systems with complex configurations, and I looked at applications of the Universal Moment Generator Function (UMGF) technique to evaluate the reliability of these systems. When I joined the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) at Cape Town, my focus shifted more to the application of machine learning principles in computer vision. At the moment, I am mostly focused on computer vision and particularly its application in health care and agriculture, where I developed an algorithm, to detect different forms of vegetation in multi spectrum images taken by drones. As well as the application of machine learning to various environmental domains.

My current interests include deep learning for image and video analysis, the combination of vision and natural language, and visual knowledge representation.
