The BYMB Academy
BYMB is known for its traditional British military style featuring brass, woodwind, percussion, bell lyres and bugles. The Band performs at concerts, arena displays, parades, carnivals, and ceremonials showcasing a diverse repertoire from classical music to pop.
The BYMB Academy is the training and development programme of Bournemouth Youth Marching Band, designed to introduce young people to music, develop their playing skills and prepare them to become confident, capable members of the Band.
Through structured group tuition, the Academy provides young people with the opportunity to learn an instrument, develop their musical knowledge and understand the discipline and teamwork required to perform as part of a marching band.
Musical education – learning to read music, understand rhythm and develop instrumental skills across brass, woodwind, bugles, bell lyres and percussion.
Progressive learning – supporting beginners with limited or no previous musical experience and helping them develop at an appropriate pace.
Marching and drill – introducing members to the movements, discipline and coordination required for marching performances.
Teamwork and commitment – learning to listen, cooperate, support others and work towards shared goals.
Performance preparation – developing the skills and confidence needed to take part in concerts, parades, carnivals, tattoos and other public events.
Personal development – encouraging confidence, resilience, responsibility, independence and pride in achievement.
The BYMB Academy is an important part of the Band's approach to youth development. It gives young people the opportunity to learn new skills, make friends, take on challenges and progress from being beginners to contributing members of a performing ensemble.
The Academy's training helps members understand that being part of BYMB involves more than playing an instrument. It means developing the pride, passion, purpose and performance that underpin the Band's culture.
Ultimately, the BYMB Academy provides the foundation on which the Band's musical standards, traditions and future success are built, while giving young people the opportunity to grow both as musicians and as individuals.
