2022년 가을, 김은혜가 선물해준 보늬밤조림을 처음 맛봤습니다. 보늬밤조림은 밤 하나하나 껍질을 까고 여러번 끓여 졸이는 아주 힘든 작업이 필요한, 정성과 사랑의 음식입니다. 그 마음에 감동한 변혜은은 다음 해 직접 만들어 다시 선물했습니다.

두 사람 사이에  오가던 약속은 2024년 "이럴 거면 같이 만들자"라는 변혜은의 제안으로 자연스럽게 <보늬밤 페스티벌>이라는 이름으로 시작됐고, '그 누구도 아닌 나를 위한 축제'라는 문장을 붙였습니다.

이듬해 변혜은은 이 행사를 정기적인 모임화로 발전시키자고 제안하며 <느슨한 보늬밤 클럽>을 기획합니다. 보늬밤조림을 매개로 느슨하게 연결되는 모임, 매년 가을이 되면 사람들이 모여 만드는 모임입니다. 이렇게 서로의 만남을 기대하고 다시 돌아올 계절을 기다리게 되었습니다.

In the autumn of 2022, Byeon Hye Eun had her first taste of Bonui-Bam Jorim(Korean preparation in which chestnuts are slowly simmered in syrup with their inner skins intact), a gift from Kim Eun Hae. Bonui-Bam Jorim is a labor-intensive dish that requires each chestnut to be carefully peeled, boiled, and simmered multiple times. It is a food made with extraordinary care, patience, and affection. Moved by the gesture, Byeon made her own batch the following year and gifted it in return.

What began as an exchange between two friends naturally evolved in 2024 when Byeon suggested, “If we’re going to do this every year, why don’t we make it together?” The gathering was playfully named the Bonui-Bam Festival, accompanied by the phrase, “A festival for no one but myself.”

The following year, Byeon proposed transforming the gathering into an ongoing community project and launched the Laid-back Chestnut Club. Centered around the making of Bonui-Bam Jorim, the club brings people together through a shared seasonal ritual. Each autumn, participants gather to make chestnuts, reconnect with one another, and welcome the return of the season. What began as a gift between two friends has gradually grown into a small community ritual built around care, reciprocity, and the anticipation of meeting again.
