Day 1
We met once again, but this time we were fortunate enough to travel to Lisbon, Portugal. We were really looking forward to learning a bunch of whole new things.
On our first day in school, Fernanda Torres, the headmistress of INETE, and Cristina Basílio, the coordinator of the project in Portugal, presented the school. Fernanda told us about the history of INETE.
She explained the different courses and the type of students there are at INETE. She also mentioned the methodologies they use at this school and pointed out the 21st century skills they work on at school.
She told us that INETE is a eTwinning school which is involved in 12 KA2 projects and in more than 100 mobilities. She explained to us that these international projects are really important and obviously a great advantage for the students that come to this school to experience a mobility abroad. They actually choose this school over many other VET schools there are in Portugal.
She explained that they intend to turn their school more “digital”. Basically, just like everyone else, they want to raise their digital skills. This is all because of the lockdown we all know so much about.
We had the opportunity to meet the student that designed the logo of our project. Congratulations!
The students of the school showed us around giving a thorough and interesting explanation of all the classrooms, workshops, laboratories,… We have had the chance to even learn how to fix the headlights of a car. David trusted me personally with that task. He was absolutely optimistic, but I was not.
We had the chance to even watch a plane. Kudos to the students for such an amazing job.
After that we started working on a project with the students where we were interviewed by them about are hometown: traditions, history, type of government, monuments, typical foods, … We had so much fun doing this activity . Shout-out to the students for their involvement in the task.
We used GSuite to create a class and a basic excel-sheet rubric to asses the skills that the students must show while doing this activity. Afterwards Danielle, an amazing Maths teacher from INETEK, showed a couple of ways to make videos to make tutorials for our students. She explained to us that a very practical way to make a tutorial is using PowerPoint 365 and recording yourself while you are explaining something.
We also learned about how to use many different games in the classroom utilising this webpage: https://learningapps.org and also https://wordwall.net/en
Day 2
Ana Catarina, who has a degree in history and archeology and who has carried out a master's thesis on Flipped Classroom, talked to us about the pandemic and its consequences and how to motivate the students in that situation ever happens again.
She talked about Inclass, which is a variation of Flipped Classroom.
Journey back to the situation in Portugal during the pandemic. She explained how it all began using a Prezi presentation.
We were asked a couple of questions: What had we learned from the lockdown? If it happened again, what would we do to motivate the students? We had a discussion about this and every school explained what they would do and what strategies they would use to motivate the students. Most of us agreed that we had not been digitally competent back then and that it was really a problem.
She showed us a video she had filmed, where she disguised as Igor the Viking to motivate the students. She explained that even parents enjoyed the film.
She also told us that she uses costumes in some of her lessons to engage students. Then she went on to show us a “escape room” (combined with Google Slides and Google Form) which she had created once again to motivate the students.
She showed us another video where she uses Fortnite characters who are dancing to ask them to mime the dance at the beginning of the lesson to motivate the students. She also uses “treasure hunt” to motivate them.
She mentioned a lot of games that she uses with her students to engage the students and mostly to take them out of the classroom and move them around, because young kids need to waste some energy. Finally, she asked us how gamification and game based learning can help with the new problems.
Finally, she explained to us how Gamification and Game Based Learning can help with the new problems.
Day 3
Two teachers of INETE (Ricardo Mauricio Fonseca and Sofia) introduced us to the “Milage Learn +”. We had to register and answer a couple of activities to check how it works.
This is an app (there is a version for the student and another one for the teachers) where teachers can evaluate students, but students can also evaluate their peers.
It is an app where the students can have lots of exercises from different subjects and they can choose what activities they want to do.
Afterwards, Marta Lopes, another member of the INETE staff has explained the project she is working on with her students, mainly, an Escape Room.
She told us that they started doing an Escape Room but had to stop because of the pandemic and they’re now working on virtual escape rooms.
She pointed out the skills that students have to practise to carry out this escape room. Among others: problem solving, logical reasoning, cooperation, communication, gaming…
At the end of the morning, we had an online meeting with Susana Concalves, a science teacher, who showed us her Virtual lab and shared with us some interesting links.
Day 4
Hugo, another student of INETE, explained in detail what Animaker is and what we can do with it. According to their web Animaker “is an online do-it-yourself (#DIY) animation video maker that brings studio quality presentations within everyone's reach”. It is actually a very useful tool to create a video presentation with animated characters in it. Here is its webpage: https://www.animaker.com
There is also an alternative webpage you can use to create something similar: https://www.powtoon.com
We started working in groups to create a video using Animaker. We must say that we really had a lot of fun making our little project. Although it needed some polishing, we were definitely very pleased with the result. After finishing our videos, we presented them to the rest of the groups.
Day 5
On our last day at school, students of INETE gave a presentation of the projects they had been working on all week. After presenting their work, we played a game they had prepared to check how much we had learned. They had designed a game themselves we were going to play.
After the kids’ presentations, the students that participated in the projects were awarded with a certificate. The teachers also received certificates for participating in this mobility.
Unfortunately, this was our last day in the course and also in Lisbon. Kudos to all the staff, all the teachers and students of INETE, you did an extraordinary job organising all this!
