Visits between the two towns are organised twice a year. In July an exchange visit is arranged for teenagers from 13 – 16 years old where they stay in families and participate in an exciting programme of activities in the local area. In France this has included: bowling, accrobranche (Go Ape), laser games, swimming as well as visiting the local area, experiencing the weekly market and numerous social events. In Bishop’s Waltham the guests have enjoyed the shopping opportunities in Southampton and Portsmouth, donutting at the Alpine Ski Centre in Southampton, swimming, ice skating and other sporting activities.
The Adult exchange visit takes place in October. This time a programme of cultural visits is organised. Visitors to Bishop’s Waltham have discovered the local breweries, museums, National Trust properties and the historic towns of Winchester, Salisbury and Bath. In France there have been visits to mineral water bottling factories, goat farms, lace makers and other interesting museums. There is always an opportunity to sample wine from the region, play pétanque and enjoy the local cuisine.
The Twinning Association needs to raise funds to subsidise the two visits each year so events are organised including barn dances, quiz night. To raise awareness we participate in various local events including the Bishop’s Waltham Show and other community activities.
