Southern Regional Medical Center, a non-profit hospital near ATL airport, seeks help in its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a hospital ward for premature babies, and its Mother/Baby ward. Georgia Tech student volunteers can help SRMC staff with simple--but vital!--tasks like feeding, diaper changing, stocking supplies, etc. Applying to volunteer is simple, training is easy, and your commitment (just one 5-hour shift/month) is modest. Get meaningful volunteer/service hours & hands-on experience in a clinical setting! Make some great friends and some great memories!
Join Buzzin' for Babies today!
Step 1
Get the VOLUNTEER APPLICATION and supplemental form. Fill out, sign, scan by hand, & email BOTH forms back to Celia Wilson-Patino, B4B's president. Pass SRMC background check & schedule orientation. (Note: Please put "Volunteering w/ Buzzin' for Babies" in the email subject line and where the application asks, "How did you hear about our program?")
Step 2
Attend orientation at SRMC. Please come all vax'ed up with immunization records in hand. SRMC will do a TB skin test, drug screen, and free flu shot.
Step 3
After orientation, work with club officers to arrange when you would be available to volunteer and, at minimum, set up your monthly 5-hour shift.
Step 4
Arrive at SRMC 15 minutes before your first shift starts, check in with volunteer services & get your badge, report to the NICU or M/B ward, & get put to work lending a hand!
Directions
SRMC is at 11 Upper Riverdale Rd in Riverdale, about 20-25 minutes away from Georgia Tech in typical traffic. For the Women's Heath Center, while driving west on Upper Riverdale Rd, go PAST the main building & main parking lot and take your immediate next RIGHT onto Tuxedo Trail. Parking for the Women's Center (image at left) will be on your immediate right. For Volunteer Services, park in the main lot, enter SRMC main entrance, and follow signs.
Notes:
Attire for the NICU & M/B ward and for orientation should be business causal, though sneakers/tennis shoes are permittable. No denim, leggings, or sweatpants, please. Also, close-toed, no slip shoes only, please.
Please remember--no food, drink, or photography in the wards.
Please be patient as you onboard with us! Volunteer applications can only be processed so fast, and they may be processed in batches as opposed to when they are individually submitted, so please bear with the process. We promise the wait will be worth it!
Please, please, PLEASE don't flake out of any shift you've agreed to work! The SRMC staff are counting on their GT student volunteers for help, so please honor your commitments. If you need to reschedule a shift, please do so at least two weeks in advance. If you have a last-minute cancellation, please phone SRMC at 770-991-8000 and leave a message for the SRMC staff indicating you can't make your shift. Please understand that after two last-minute "no shows," you may be removed from further scheduling until the beginning of the next academic year.
Volunteers without transportation are encouraged to utilize MARTA and ridesharing options such as Uber or Lyft to get to SRMC. For liability reasons, the club isn't able to facilitate ridesharing. Students ridesharing to volunteer must make arrangements on their own to do so and will assume all responsibilities and risks of doing so.
Summer opportunities to volunteer are encouraged! If you will be in ATL during the summer months, please to continue to volunteer.
Volunteering does not require you to have any special medical knowledge or training. You'll definitely gain patient contact hours, but won't be doing any clinical procedures or anything like that.
