"Our classrooms need to be places where all the children from all the cultures that make up the salad bowl of American society can find their mirrors."

We are happy to announce a new addition to Burr as of September 2022: A Little Diverse Library! This library, located in front of Burr, contains books with diverse content, authors, characters, and themes. The goal is to help our students and families learn about, access, and enjoy books with a multicultural focus.
As Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop, a professor of children's literature, highlighted, children (and all of us!) benefit from reading books that give us exposure to both windows and mirrors: windows provide us with insight into others' lives and experiences, and mirrors reflect and affirm our own identities and experiences.
Looking for reading material for your family? Stop by and pick out a book or two for your family to enjoy. When you're done with the book, just drop it back off at the Little Library so other families can enjoy!

The artwork was designed by artist and Burr teacher, Jayme Ellis. Under Jayme's direction, Burr students included fingerprints in skin tones to reflect the diversity at the school.
At this time, we ask that no books are dropped off at the Little Library. Rather, if you have books or suggestions, feel free to let us know at BurrFORJ171@gmail.com.
Turning Pages: My Life Story, by Sonia Sotomayor
As the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor has inspired young people around the world to reach for their dreams. But what inspired her? For young Sonia, the answer was books! They were her mirrors, her maps, her friends, and her teachers. They helped her to connect with her family in New York and in Puerto Rico, to deal with her diabetes diagnosis, to cope with her father's death, to uncover the secrets of the world, and to dream of a future for herself in which anything was possible.
