The Building Futures, Airdrie program in Rocky View Schools, is known for its innovative approach to connecting experiential, interdisciply and authentic learning opportunities for High School students. Each year, grade 10 students from across the Airdrie complete their grade 10 interdisciplinary and experiential program including CTS courses, while working in partnership with McKee homes, to build a house. This year, Building Futures is working with Verena Roberts, (EdD Candidate, Werklund School of Education- UofCalgary), to examine how to go beyond an already exceptional program, by considering how students can expand their learning beyond classroom walls and why expanding your learning is so essential in all learning environments. The design-based research component focuses on expanding perspectives through interactions in digital and community contexts and how open learning provides students the support they need as they consider how to be lifelong learners. The students are gaining valuable insight into why this program and learning opportunity Is Not Just About a House.
