Visual Arts

What is disciplinary literacy in visual arts?

In the visual arts, developing literacy occurs as a result of:

  • engaging in artistic creation processes authentically through the use of traditional and non-traditional materials (such as charcoal, paper, or technology)
  • discovering the expressive elements and principles of art
  • knowing the terminology that is used to comprehend art
  • being able to reflect, critique, and connect personal experience to art

From the California Department of Education (2019). California Arts Standards for Visual Arts, page 1.

Visual Arts texts that students create, read, listen to, or view include but are not limited to:

Visual works of art, proposals, art reviews, technical documents, interviews, biographies, and informational text about the aesthetics and historical/cultural context of visual art.
