After careful study and community input, and with Board of Education approval, RSD #17 is moving forward with a renovation plan. The plan addresses aging infrastructure, improves safety and accessibility, and modernizes learning spaces at HKHS.
The Building HKHS’s Future Community Advisory Group was formed to provide clear information. It encourages dialogue and supports community understanding as the project advances through the state approval process.
On May 26, 2026, the Governor signed special legislation that approved our project requests! The approved requests were:
A space waiver, this allows us to keep space above what would be approved under current state specifications for school buiildings. This allows us to keep our legacy spaces and spaces for unique academic programming.
The project will be backed-unto this year’s “Priority List” of school construction projects.
We will receive the Fiscal Year 2026 reimbursement rate of 51.43%.
Athletic elements (spaces in the building as well as fields, etc.) will be “fully eligible” for reimbursement.
On 2/10/2026, The Board of Education accepted the recommendation of the HKHS Feasibility Study Team to move ahead with a renovate as new project at HKHS. Please watch the presentation from the 1/24 community conversation on why this project was recommended.
Now we as community members are working to educate the community about why this project is so important and why the community needs to VOTE YES!! at a referendum in the fall!
HKHS has served our community for decades. Over time, building systems deteriorate, safety standards advance, and instructional requirements shift. The proposed renovation aims to enhance infrastructure, prioritize safety, improve accessibility, and create modern learning environments, all while preserving a cherished community asset.
We encourage residents to review materials, attend meetings, and ask questions.
