N. BUĞRA ÖZEL

Professor of Accounting 

Bugra Ozel is a Professor of Accounting at the Jindal School of Management of The University of Texas at Dallas and a Senior Research Fellow at the Harris Family Alternative Investments Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to his current appointment, he was a faculty member at UCLA Anderson School of Management. He visited the Wharton School from 2019 to 2021, where he was named the Harry W. Reynolds and Judith and William Bollinger Visiting Associate Professor. He received his Ph.D. in Accounting from Columbia Business School. 

Dr. Ozel is an award-winning researcher and teacher. His research focuses on issues around corporate compliance and disclosure and has been published in top journals, including the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Financial Economics, The Accounting Review, and The Review of Accounting Studies. His papers won several awards, including the American Accounting Association's 2022 FARS Best Paper Award, and are mentioned in many media outlets, including the Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, New York Times, Bloomberg, Fortune Magazine, Inc Magazine, Forbes, S&P Market Intelligence, and Harvard Business Review.

Dr. Ozel is named among The Best 40 Business School Professors under 40 in 2021 by Poets & Quants and is a recipient of The Wharton School's 2020 and 2021 Teaching Excellence Awards and UCLA Anderson's 2014 Dean George Robbins Award for Teaching Excellence.

Dr. Ozel is the coordinator of the Accounting Area PhD Program at the Jindal School and the founder and academic director of the Center for Corporate Compliance at the Jindal School. He is also involved with Girls Who Invest, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing gender diversity in investment management.

Research Interests

Primary: Corporate disclosure; Corporate compliance (labor laws, commercial law, and taxation); Debt markets. 

Dr. Ozel's research primarily explores topics at the intersection of accounting and economics with a strong focus on corporate disclosure and compliance issues that can have a social impact. His research contributions have significantly influenced the development of multiple rules and regulations, garnering the attention and engagement of various of policymakers and regulators.
