This hotel is swanky and luxurious, and extremely centrally located. The over-the-top Buddha theme won't work for everyone (we're not convinced), but if you book into a Buddha Bar hotel you should at least know what you are getting into - it is a high-end chain after all, and a popular one. And in the depths of Prague's snowy winter, being transported to humid Asian climes might feel very appealing indeed.

The concept here is "Chinoiserie-meets-art-nouveau," as best as we can tell, meshing the hotel's original 100-year-old structure with Asian script and Buddhas throughout. At peak times the lobby hums with a motley collection of moneyed Europeans chatting with the Czech staff wearing Chinese outfits. Guests get to use a separate entrance for the Buddha Bar, and breakfast is served in the more Continental Siddhartha Caf.

In the rooms, the hotel's eccentric theme comes across as black-lacquer cabinetry and silky smooth linens. Beds are large and comfortable, but the decoration might be a bit much for some: gold dragons on red panels above your bed aren't for everyone, and they also don't exactly scream Czech Republic.

Bathrooms go down a similar road, and might be a bit "love it or hate it." We must admit we aren't sure, although the freestanding bathtubs with a mosaic of a dragon on the exterior have to be seen to be believed. On the other hand, the cosmetics and appliances are luxurious, the bathrobes have been specially designed for the hotel, and the mirrors double up as TV screens. Fancy.

The spa is small but management compensates with in-room treatments. It still manages to offer a jacuzzi, steam room, fireplace and lounge corner. The beauty treatments or "rituals," as the hotel calls them, use La Sultane de Saba products.

Buddha Bar is perhaps the part of the hotel where the concept works the best, for us; the red theme, the Buddha statues, the lampshade chandeliers, and the gold chairs all seem to come together into a smart venue for good cocktails.

Set inside a restored residential building, the hotel is just a five-minute walk from Old Town Square and a 10-minute stroll to Wenceslas Square and Josefov, which hosts the Old Cemetery, the Spanish Synagogue and other remnants of the area's Jewish past. You can even walk to the Royal Palace in half an hour, and the surrounding area is awash with bars, shops and boutiques of all kinds; the famous Pariska shopping street is a few minutes' walk away.

The Buddha Bar brand has never been afraid of striking a pose, and this Prague iteration is no exception. The check-in area is manned by young, hip staff in slick designer uniforms and watched over by a three-foot-tall Buddha statue. The colour scheme is the usual red and gold, though since most of the hotel is purposefully plunged into semi-darkness, it's perhaps best to concentrate on the outlines rather than specific hues.

Service is youthful and crisply efficient, with reception offering private transfers, valet parking, plus restaurant reservations, private and public tours, and a laundry service. Guests also get a smart phone to carry with them during their stay, with free internet access, maps, free international calls and direct communication with the hotel concierge.

The hotel is mainly aimed at adults, but families are welcome and there is a children's playground corner at the Buddha-Bar restaurant. The hotel can arrange babysitting services for an extra charge.

And of course, being so centrally located, there are plenty of excellent restaurant options and sights to see nearby.

Actually everything was nice, my next choice again in Prague. My room was big and luxurious with a beautiful bathroom, very comfortable large bed, as for instance, greatly enjoyed it. The location was great, for example, a historic square was not too far from the hotel.
