Life Purpose in Film & TV

Your life purpose consists of the central motivating aims of your life—the reasons you get up in the morning.

Purpose can guide life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, offer a sense of direction, and create meaning. For some people, purpose is connected to vocation—meaningful, satisfying work. For others, their purpose lies in their responsibilities to their family or friends. Others seek meaning through spirituality or religious beliefs. Some people may find their purpose clearly expressed in all these aspects of life. (Barb Leonard, PhD, RN, PNP Mary Jo Kreitzer, RN, PhD)

Check out the clips below as we explore this theme in popular culture.

The Good Place

Everything you do on Earth has a point value. Michael explains the point system that calculates a total score based on Earthly actions, which ultimately determines whether or not a person ends up in "The Good Place." In this reality, our purpose seems to be to live 'good' lives for the purpose of attaining something better in the afterlife.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

"Maybe Christmas, perhaps, mean's a little bit more." The Grinch learns a lesson not just about Christmas, but about human nature, and how he was meant to interact with the Whos down in Whoville every day of his life.

Disney's Moana

Moana feels torn between what is calling her and what people (her family/village) are telling her to do. She feels as though something is innately wrong with her because she does not meet expectations. Ultimately, listening to who she is deep within brings life back to her dying island and sets her free to be truly happy.

Groundhog Day

Someone in a forum likened Phil’s story with the path taken by most humans in life, where they are doomed to repeat certain problems until they attain the revelation to deal with it appropriately. Some likened it with the path of reincarnation, where humans are made to live over and over again until they attain the necessary lesson and ascend in their path. I found both to be very fascinating interpretations that I agree with. In fact [this author] wrote a post about recurring patterns, inspired by Groundhog Day: Are You Facing Repeating Patterns in Life?
