BSC.ARCH HONS E-PORTFOLIO REVIEW
Y1 DESIGN STUDIO 2
Y1 DESIGN STUDIO 2
Design 2 introduces more comprehensive design tasks with the advanced application of basic architectural theory, architectural elements and design principles. Design 2 focuses on responding to client’s spatial requirements, site context, and the constructability of the design project.
Therefore, responding to the demand of users, the site context and parameters, and knowledge about basic building assembly, construction and structure are important. Students will undergo a series of functional projects from simple plan to a complex liveable design unit.
Projects in this course consist of Project 1: A Self-made Shelter, Project 2: A Building Analysis, and Project 3, which comprises of Project 3A: A Basic Site Analysis as well as major project of Project 3B: A Retreat House. All the projects require critical thinking, design skills and creativity to integrate knowledge in relation to space programming, form making, user needs, site planning, environmental response, precedent study, structural system and construction technology. Students will experience working in a design team to produce a collective design process and outcomes. The program also includes a systematic and effective design approach and process to heighten the ability to imagine, analyse and synthesise the design projects.
Integration with:
SBEA1223 Basic Architectural Computing
SBEA1313 Structure & Construction 1
Project 1 - A Self- made Shelter
Project 2 - A Building Analysis
Project 3A - A Basic Site Analysis
Project 3B - A Retreat House
The purpose of this Project 3a groupwork is to conduct a basic site analysis before designing their retreat house for the main and final project. Understanding of the site's characteristics and context is crucial for developing an appropriate architectural response. This project intended to outline the key components and considerations involved in conducting a basic site analysis, before we move into individual main project of Project 3b: A Retreat House for Architect.
