Sadly, this event has been cancelled due to forecasted freezing temperatures and non-stop rain.

The troop recently rode on the North Riverfront Trail, starting near the Arch, the few scouts that attended headed north for approximately an hour and a half before turning around and heading back. Although it was quite a cold day and it was quite windy, the scouts enjoyed it. Laser Tag was a fun event that was scheduled to take place after the adventure; however, because of the low number of participants, this ended up being canceled.

Sadly Philmont, a BSA high adventure camp in New Mexico, was forced to cancel all treks for the 2018 summer because of both the Ute Park Fire and an additional wildfire that started just south of Philmont that spread onto the southern portion of the ranch. The crews, including our own, whose treks were affected by the wildfire have been given the opportunity to reschedule for the 2020 summer. For additional information about the fires or the cancelations, please visit Philmont's website.

Troop 98 was at summer camp from July 8-14. This year the troop went to Camp Famous Eagle, which is near Farmington, MO. Four scouts from troop 98 were present and we camped with Troop 23 and Troop 38. Scouts at camp earned merit badges such as rifle shooting, archery, environmental science, first aid, swimming, cooking, wood carving, and leatherwork. Camp Famous Eagle also has an air-conditioned dining hall which provided a nice break from the heat during meal times. One scout from troop 98 was elected into the order of the arrow and went through the pre-ordeal at camp. The scouts who were able to attend summer camp had a great time and got many merit badges that will help them advance.

On June 7th, 2018, Troop 98 held its first outdoor meeting in a while, making use of our proximity to Forest Park. There, four scouts, with the help of three adult leaders, worked on sharpening our orienteering skills. Going between the handball courts, rugby field, and pond, we learned many techniques important to finding our location and reaching our destination using only a map and compass.

On March 10th and 11th, 2018, the Philmont Crew went on a "Backpacking trip" at Hawn State Park. Because of some confusion, instead of staying at one of the back-country camps on the trail, a normal campsite was reserved instead. So after leaving at 7 in the morning from St. Roch, we embarked on the hour and a half long drive. Due to a couple of wrong turns, checking in at the campsite, and fixing one of the member's backpack. we set off on the 10-11 mile trail at 9:45 instead of the planed 9:00. Just before we started on the Whispering Pines trail, it was decided that we would take the 0.7 mile Pickle Creek trail which then connects to Whispering Pines about a mile down the trail. Pickle Creek is a rocky technical trail that was made difficult by the 30-45 pound packs that we were carrying. However, it was thoroughly enjoyed by the members of the crew. Next we continued on the Whispering Pines trail. Aside from a super rocky and steep hill about 9 miles in, it went by uneventfully. When we arrived back at camp, tents and hammocks were set up and it was on to cooking dinner. Except for one slight problem, the stoves
On February 17 , 2018, the Philmont crew went on a series of hikes totaling ten miles with full packs at Castlewood State Park. The crew left St. Roch at 7:00 am and arrived at the park about 45 minutes later. One of the exiting things about this hike in particular is that it was snowing for the first half, which, although caused a few nasty falls, made the scenery incredibly picturesque. Joe (member of the Philmont crew) had some trouble when the soles fell off his hiking books halfway the second of three trails, and he unfortunately had to walk the rest of the way in his tennis shoes. This hike was a great preparation hike for Philmont.
On January 4 , 2018, the annual scout breakfast was held in the basement of St. Roch's church. In addition to the breakfast, which was graciously prepared for us by some former scout parents, awards were given to the few scouts with rank advancements and merit badges and participants on recent events were given patches. Updates were also given about the current state of the troop and plans for the future. Nathaniel Doty (SPL) and Paul Winter (Scoutmaster) mainly ran the meeting with scouts and adults who went on the events giving details about what they did.
From January 26 -28, both the Philmont crew and the scouts not going to Philmont cabin camped at S bar F. Due to some misunderstanding in the reservation process, we were not in Swift Lodge both nights, only the second one. The first night we were in the Scout Lodge, which unlike Swift lodge doesn't have electrical heat or running water inside the cabin. This meant that myself and Nathaniel (SPL) were chopping firewood for the wood stove until close to 11 p.m. However, we did have a nice warm night inside the cabin even through temperatures got down into the 30's. On Saturday, The Philmont crew went on a ten mile hike around the front loop of the Three Notch Trail, carrying packs that were approximately 30 pounds. Meanwhile, the scouts not on the Philmont training hike, took part in a smaller hike down to Castle Rock where they climbed around. The rest of the day for them was spent playing various games inside the cabin. Pizza was the dinner for the non-Philmont scouts and Shepherd's pie was for the Philmont crew.
On Saturday, December 2, 2017 a contingent of six scouts and six adults took a hike at Beaumont Scout Reservation. Hiking on a combination of the Green, Red, and Yellow trails, we tried to complete the 5-mile hike requirements for the younger scouts. The hike is meant to improve one's orientation skills, comfort with a map and compass, and, of course, to have fun.
