As an educator I am responsible for not only covering the material within the NYS mandates curriculum but also material that goes "beyond the curriculum". Below are a few examples of teaching beyond the curriculum that I have embedded into and around my instruction.
Teaching Philosophy:
My teaching philosophy is an idea that start and ends with the students. In order to truly captivate and engage a child their teacher must be able to connect with the students. This is accomplished by relating and building a strong rapport with one's students. Children do not want to learn, nor do they show respect for a teacher that they do not like. Creating a strong foundation in which the teacher and student may grow from is a quintessential part of being a successful teacher. It creates a sense of comfort and acceptance for both the teacher and student. I have seen educators who do not build a strong friendship and wholesome relationship with their students. As a result the teacher struggled to connect, engage, and guide their students to a prosperous learning experience. Any educator can study teaching strategies, memorize the curriculum, or create a colorful and fun classroom. Unfortunately, until that teacher truly connects and builds a respectable relationship with their students no true learning can occur. I have made the commitment to always build a strong and prosperous relationship with my students in order to ensure genuine learning will occur.
SEL Learning: Social and Emotional learning has become a forefront within the educational community. Helping students to better understand and express their emotions is a paramount aspect of learning in my classroom. below are some wonderful examples of SEL learning that I have used.
Community Circle
Talking Piece
Growth Mindset V.S. Fixed Mindset
Choice Board (Emotions/Feelings)
Classroom Community: Within my classroom I make it a priority to have an all inclusive, welcoming environment. Students are treated as an integral part of my classroom in which they are all valued and appreciated. Here are a few examples of how I have achieved this in my classroom.
Welcoming students each day
Classroom goal/reward system
