Mission Statement

The Ponderosa Band Program’s mission is to ensure that the skills necessary to become first-class musicians, performers, and leaders are being developed by providing high quality music instruction as part of a well-rounded education.

About Us

The Ponderosa Band Program is home to award-winning groups and musicians and serves approximately 200 students each year. Ensembles include concert band, symphonic band, two jazz bands, competitive field show marching band, winter percussion, winter color guard, and a number of student-run combo ensembles. Our talented young students work extremely hard and spend hours in preparation for exciting performances both local and afar. The band program consistently brings home top ratings in all their performance endeavors.

Support

The band is supported by the Ponderosa High School Band Booster Club, a 501c3 non-profit organization that aides in supporting the Ponderosa Bands and Color Guard. Please join the Boosters and help us provide the best band experience for our kids!

Meet our Staff!

Band Director – Taylor Sabado

Taylor Sabado is from Sacramento, CA. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Music Education. Taylor holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Bassoon Performance from Sacramento State University as well as her Teaching Credential in Music and a certificate in Band Instrument Repair Technology. She performed with the Sacramento Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps in 2005 and 2007 and went on instruct the corps from 2012-2015. She is currently President for the California Music Educators Association, Capitol Section.

Percussion Caption Head & Pit Arranger – Kevin Bowlson

Kevin Bowlson is a percussion instructor from Sacramento, California who began his teaching career in 2010. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Music from Sacramento State University, where he participated as a member of the marching band’s battery and front ensemble. He is currently on staff with the Sacramento State Marching Band and Sac State Indoor Percussion. As a performer, Kevin was a member of the Sacramento Mandarins Front Ensemble from 2008 until aging out in 2013. In addition, he marched two seasons of WGI, one with eNVision Performing Arts and the other with Valley Independent Percussion. While at VIP, the group placed third in their class at WGI Finals. When Kevin isn’t playing or teaching percussion, he is usually playing the clarinet. He has played in many of Sac State’s ensembles, as well as many others in the Sacramento area. Kevin is very excited to be working with the Ponderosa Bruin Band Program!

Battery Instructor – Anthony Derris

Anthony is a drummer and percussionist originally from San Diego but has moved to Sacramento pursuing his degree in Child Development from Sacramento State University. Anthony has performed with Envision, a WGI group based out of Reno for the 2015 season where he played snare, he has also performed with UCSD symphony with his percussion teacher and mentor Daniel Pate. He has worked with Various High school within the Spring Valley and San Diego area but, most recently has decide to start working with High schools in the Sacramento Area. He is a member of the Sac State Drumline and has been for the past 3 years where he plays snare.

Drill Designer – Santiago Sabado

Santiago Sabado is from Placerville, CA and a graduate of Ponderosa HS. He holds his Masters in Instrumental Wind Conducting, Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Trumpet Performance from Sacramento State University as well as his Teaching Credential in Music. He performed with the Sacramento Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps from 2006-2009 and went on instruct the corps from 2010-2015. He serves as a judge for the Northern California Band Association as well as the President for the California Music Educators Association- Capitol Section. Santiago also enjoys teaching music at the Sugarloaf Fine Arts camp during the summers.
