Student researchers are responsible for reading and following all science fair rules. Most projects can be completed successfully within the rules.
The Broward Regional Science & Engineering Fair (BRSEF) is affiliated with both the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and the State Science & Engineering Fair of Florida (SSEF). All projects must follow ISEF rules. However, SSEF and BRSEF may have additional requirements that are more restrictive. Be sure to review all three rulebooks.
The purpose of the paperwork is to document that appropriate safety and ethical guidelines are being followed to protect: student researchers, human participants, vertebrate animals, and the environment.
Forms are reviewed only to determine whether rules were followed. Project quality is evaluated separately by judges during the competition.
Parent/Guardian Parents are encouraged to help. The amount of assistance will vary based on the student's age, experience, and project type. Students will not be penalized for receiving appropriate adult support.
Adult Sponsor (Required for Every Project) An adult who checks in periodically and provides general oversight of the project.
Direct Supervisor (Required for Some Projects) An adult who directly supervises the student's work when the project involves hazardous chemicals, activities, or devices (HCADs).
Qualified Scientist (When Required) An individual with an advanced degree (PhD, MD, DVM, etc.) or significant documented expertise in the field who reviews and approves the research plan. The Qualified Scientist may also serve as the Direct Supervisor.
Note: One person may fill multiple roles, but Adult Sponsors, Direct Supervisors, and Qualified Scientists cannot serve on the SRC/IRB reviewing the project.
