Demonstrations/Illustrated Talks & Public Speaking

These events are a great way to learn more about a topic or think more critically about a topic you are an expert in! Plus you get experience in public speaking!

You can enter a Demonstration or an Illustrated Talk. Choose one event of the two when you REGISTER by February 28th. Public speaking is a separate event from Demonstrations/Illustrated Talks. Read the Premium Book for full details.

Demonstration: Present a 3-12 minute speech (ages 5-13) or 5-12 minute speech (ages 14-18) demonstrating something. In the past, we have seen demonstrations of how to filet a fish and how to shoot an arrow to hit a target. Props can be used and you can enter as an individual or with a partner. See the RUBRIC.

Illustrated Talk: Present a 3-12 minute speech (ages 5-13) or 5-12 minute speech (ages 14-18) explaining, teaching or demonstrating something using a PowerPoint or other "illustrated" visual aid. Props can be used and you can enter as an individual or with a partner. In the past, we have seen illustrated talks on snakes, how donuts are made, and the history of applause. See the RUBRIC.

Public Speaking: Present a 3-7 minute original speech (ages 5-13) or 5-7 minute original speech (ages 14-18). The speech must relate to 4-H in some way, even if 4-H is not the featured topic. See the RUBRIC.

This is a great example of an Illustrated Talk!

Hayden entered this virtual Illustrated Talk in the 2020 Broward 4-H Community Fair in March 2020 when we suddenly had to go virtual. After earning a blue ribbon in our county, he competed at the University of Florida & Florida 4-H's annual 4-H University and placed 2nd place in the state in the Nature & Outdoor category!! We are so proud!
