We've also reviewed Merrill Edge Guided Investing robo advisor service.

Pros & Cons

Pros Explained

  • Merrill Edge is integrated with Bank of America so customers can manage both their investing and banking accounts from one place. Customers also get additional perks.

  • Merrill Edge combines Morningstar and Lipper research with its own research team in order to deliver top-quality reports on stocks, news and market commentary.

  • Merrill Edge does not require a minimum account and allows unlimited trades of stock and ETFs online for $0. Additional perks are available to clients who have at least $20,000 combined in investment and deposit accounts through the Preferred rewards program.

The Cons

  • Merrill Edge supports stock and ETF options as well as fixed income trading. However, it lacks some products that active traders need, such futures, futures options and forex. Investors seeking advanced trading opportunities will not find them here.

  • Merrill Edge is suitable for DIY investors and traders. It is not suitable for active traders due to the inability to route orders and advanced order types, as well as slow order entry.

  • Merrill Edge options strategies are limited to two legs. Many brokers offer more than four. According to the company, it will continue to support four-leg strategies.

Useability

Merrill Edge is easy to use, even if you are a Bank of America customer. Logging on to Merrill Edge will allow you to view your account balances and portfolio performance as well as market updates. The top screen has five tabs: Accounts, Trade and Research. These tabs are easy to navigate and allow you to locate resources and tools. The Trade tab allows you to launch MarketPro, which is accessible to all clients, regardless of their account size or activity. Although the website cannot be customized, MarketPro allows you to customize it and set default trading settings.

MarketPro and Merrill Edge, both available for Android and iOS, provide real-time streaming quotes and news that you can view simultaneously on multiple devices. MarketPro is supported by the app, which supports the same order types as MarketPro, and the same asset classes, with the exception of fixed income. The app allows you to monitor, manage and create watchlists. You can also share your watchlists between the mobile app and the web. MarketPro watchlists can be saved to your device, not the cloud. MarketPro and the app both offer charting and research. You can also overlay a range of technical indicators on either platform.

Trade Experience

Trading on Merrill Edge's platforms can be simple and intuitive. MarketPro provides a lot of customization options including color schemes and font sizes, layouts, hotkeys, alerts, default trade settings, and alerts. MarketPro users can click the right-click on the chart to choose "buy" or the "sell" option at the current price. Mobile and web users can click on the "Trade” icon in the chart header. This prefills their order ticket with symbol information. Overall, the MarketPro chart trading interface was less intuitive than other platforms. It does the job, even for retail traders with more complex needs.

MarketPro and mobile offer streaming real-time quotes that you can view on multiple devices simultaneously. You can enter multiple orders at once or stage them for later entry.

Mobile Trade Experience

The Merrill Edge mobile application doesn't allow you to customize many features. It's still well-designed and contains most of the same tools and resources as the desktop platform. Chart trading and drawing on charts are not supported by the app. However, you can click "Trade" in the chart header to fill the order ticket with symbol information. MarketPro doesn't allow you to place multiple orders at once or stage orders for later entry. The app allows you to filter the news feeds displayed, just like online. Watchlists that you create through the web platform can be synced to your mobile app. However, MarketPro watchlists only reside on the computer running the app. Recent enhancements have made it possible for mobile users make rollover contributions and gain access to 529 plans as well as SEP IRA accounts.

A wide range of offerings

Merrill Edge customers have the ability to trade stocks, ETFs and options. App traders can only trade stocks, ETFs and options. Merrill Edge doesn't offer futures, options or forex trading. Notable is the fact that Merrill Edge does not support fractional trading. A live broker can help with some international transactions. Merrill Edge allows investors to trade the following on MarketPro and the website:

  • Stocks short and long. Merrill Edge's stock borrowing process is fully automated for all short sales locates. It can locate stocks that are available immediately if inventory is available.

  • OTCBB (penny stock) OTCBB transactions that are based on market capital may be restricted by certain restrictions.

  • Mutual funds (approximately 3,100, no-load, and no transaction fees).

  • Bonds: corporate, municipal, treasury, CDs.

  • There are two options: single leg or two-leg. Plans to add four-leg strategies by early 2021.

  • Robo-advisory integrated in the website and mobile application

  • International trades via a live broker.

Types of Order

Merrill Edge supports basic orders across all platforms (e.g. market, limit and stop limit, trailing stops), but doesn't provide advanced conditional orders for active traders. If you have been investing in stocks for a long time, you can select the tax lot at closing. Or you can make an account-wide default to choose the tax lot (such as average cost or last-in-first out). ).

Trade Technology

Merrill Edge uses the Bank of America Merrill Lynch's (BofAML), smart order router. The smart order router searches for reserve and displayed liquidity at visible and hidden venues at all price levels, up to the order's maximum price. The router will post any remaining quantity to multiple venues if an order is not marketable and redistribute the posted share quantities dynamically when executions occur. The technology approaches filling orders by first seeking price improvements rather than speed of execution. Merrill reported that 99% of orders were executed faster than the quoted price, and the average execution time was 0.07 seconds. Merrill also reported $24.60 average savings on 1,000 share market orders. Merrill Edge will not accept orders from market makers.

Merrill Edge boasts an advanced order routing feature, but it is very limited. Merrill Edge does not support simulated trading, backtesting or automated trading.

Prices

How this broker makes money for you and from you

It's becoming less common for brokerages to charge commissions in order to stay in business. These are the hidden ways Merrill Edge makes money for you and for you.

  • Interest on cash -Merrill Edge earns money by the difference between what you pay and what you can earn on your cash balances. For your cash, you can choose to open a bank deposit or money market account. The interest rate earned on your cash is automatically swept to at least half the Federal Funds rate. You'll only earn 0.01% on cash balances if you don't make a choice.

  • Stock Loan Program Merrill Edge makes money by lending stocks to your account for short-term sales. This revenue is not shared with you.

  • Order flow payment:Merrill Edge doesn't accept payments for order flow (PFOF), from third-party market players.

  • Price Improvement Merrill Edge's smart ordering router monitors trade executions to ensure quality. On average, customers achieve a price increase of $0.0246 per share for orders over 1000 shares. Options have a net price increase of $0.065.

  • Portfolio margining Merrill Edge doesn't offer portfolio margining. However, it can reduce the amount of margin you require based on your overall risk. Portfolio margining is best for customers who trade derivatives to offset their equity position risk.

Merrill Edge is not suited for active traders. Merrill Edge doesn't offer advanced order types. You can't backtest and automate strategies. There's also no way to trade as quickly as active traders would like. Active traders may find the limited investment options a problem. They might want to have access to forex, futures options, forex and cryptocurrencies. Merrill Edge is a solid choice for both a brokerage and trading platform if you don't require advanced platform capabilities or the product lineup suits your needs.
