All you really need is a pair of comfortable shoes, a positive attitude, and a smile 😊
We don’t recommend rubber soles shoes because they can stick to the floor. When you bring your feet together or pass your feet, they may “grab” the floor too much, making turns and smooth movements more difficult.
Shoes that allow you to pivot and glide comfortably will make your dancing experience much more enjoyable. 💃🕺. Suede natural leather is ideal for the soles of your dance shoes and a shoe brush to clean the soles from time to time.
If you can walk, you can do social ballroom dancing.
The basic foundation of ballroom dance is the walk. Almost every pattern, turn, and figure grows out of simple walking steps. Once you learn how to walk with rhythm, balance, and connection to your partner, you already have the most important skill.
So if you can walk, you can social dance. It really is that simple. 💃🕺
It’s completely normal to go through a stage of confusion when you’re learning to dance. It can take a few months before you’re able to easily tell a Cha-Cha from a Swing. Many steps feel similar at first because the basic components of all ballroom dances are the same.
With a few months of classes and practice parties, everything will start to feel much clearer and more natural. Keep going — it all comes together! 💃🕺
You do not need a partner to join our classes. From our experience teaching all over the US and Europe, the ratio in ballroom classes is usually quite even — sometimes there are even a couple of extra ladies.
We encourage all dancers who want to become more well-rounded to learn both the man’s and the lady’s parts. For more experienced and intermediate dancers, learning both how to lead and how to follow gives you a better perspective on what the other role is going through — and that makes everyone a better dancer. Many ladies comfortably lead, follow, and dance the man’s part in social settings.
Interesting fact: In Argentina, it’s common for Argentine Tango dancers (men) to practice together before partnering with a lady. This helps them develop strong leading skills and become proficient before stepping onto the social dance floor.
It’s okay if you miss some classes. We always review the dances and steps before introducing new material.
If you feel like you’ve missed something important, don’t hesitate to ask in class, speak with the teacher, or book a half-hour or one-hour private lesson if you’d like to catch up.
We’re here to help and to make everyone’s experience fun and enjoyable! 😊
Ballroom dancing is a unique sport and form of exercise that allows you to be creative while staying physically and socially active. It combines movement, music, connection, and self-expression — all in one activity.
As a hobby, it can also be very inexpensive. For the price of a burger a week, you can exercise, spend time with friends, and do something that’s great for both your mental and physical health.
Most importantly… it’s a lot of FUN! 😊💃🕺
