My Teaching Philosophys Foundation
I have three core values at the base of my teaching philosophy. My first value is creativity which I define as using original ideas and mediums when producing and completing work. Creativity is essential in a classroom as every child perceives the world differently. Considering some children perceive the world through touching, others through seeing, and others by listening. Therefore, I think for children to succeed they should be able to decide how they want to complete classwork whether it be through essays, drawings, songs, etc.
My second value is collaboration. I define collaboration as the process of working with others to satisfy all needs and expectations. I want my class to be as engaging and enjoyable as possible and I believe the only way to achieve this is through discussing with the students. Their ability to explain why they prefer something is where the importance of critical thinking comes into play.
The last value of my teaching philosophy highlights the importance of individualism. For me, individualism is the act of being able to freely express one's authentic self through ideas, clothing, and gender. By the time I officially become a teacher there will be new ways for people to identify and express themselves. Therefore, I want my classroom to be a safe space where people can express their true selves. However, I also want to be able to teach the importance of individualism to my students. I think English teachers have a lot of resources when it comes to advocating for individualism such as short films tackling the topic, books, and articles.
