I was born and raised in Gaspe, Quebec. For me, it truly is heavan on earth. Growing up I would wake up everyday with the view of the ocean, with the fresh, sea breeze smell. There is really nothing like it.
Growing up I was good in school, made the honour roll all throughout highschool. As you'll read further on, I inicially wanted to be a veterinarian. However, my last year in high school and all throughout Cegep I noticed things that ultimately made me decide to pursue an education careeer.
I wasn't a teacher's pet, even though I had good grades. I had a little of an attitude program and hung out with people I probably shouldn't of. However, during my Secondary 5 year, I had a replacement as my Ethics and Religious Culture (ERC) teacher. Very quickly he saw something in me that no other teacher had. He started to encourage me, challenge my thinking but in a good way, and simply believed in me. It was the first time a teacher saw value in me as a person over me as a student.
I decided to go to Cegep because I was unsure what I wanted to do with my life. There, I started to notice all the faults in education. Faults such as teachers who abuse authority, little empathy and compassion, and no collaboration. I pushed through Cegep but barely made it out. After Cegep, I decided to apply to St. Thomas University in New Brunswick where I would have did a double major in Criminology and Psychology. However, the beginning of 2020 rolled around and COVID-19 was making the future seem uncertain. Something didn't feel right about going so I decided to take a year off school.
During that year, I worked as an assistant manager at Super C in Gaspe. I absolutely hated it except for the fact that many of my friends also worked there. When March 2021 arrived, I knew I had to apply somewhere. I decided to apply to Bishop's with the mindset of if I didn't get in then it doesn't matter. However, the moment I got the accpetance letter I was ecstatic. Two years later and I'm in my second year at Bishop's University and I have no regrets.
For the past year, I have worked at Doolittle's Co-op. Doolittle's Co-op is Bishop's Unversity's bookstore which provides students with all their necessities such as course material, general literature, office supplies, art supples, merchandise, and food/alcohol. It is a nice student job as it is flexible, I get to meet other students, and work closely with staff and faculty.
When I am not in school or working, I like being outdoors. I grew up being on the water or playing in the snow and these acitivies have definitely transferred over into my adult life. In the summer, you will likely catch me doing one of three things. The first thing is paddle boarding in Penouille. Penouille is located in Gaspe and has the perfect view and wildlife. While paddle boarding you can encounter birds, fish, and even seals. The next thing I enjoy doing is kayaking. Similar to paddle boarding, I encounter a lot of wildlife and get to take in the beautiful scenery. The last thing I enjoy doing in the summer is fishing. I fish trout, bass, and mackeral but prefer bass as they are a stronger fish and are more fun to reel in.
During the winter I also do a lot of outdoor activities. I love going snowshoeing and exploring the different trails in Sherbrooke. I also enjoy skiing but have not had the opportunity to test out the slopes in Sherbrooke yet. Finally, I enjoy ice fishing. However, trout is the only type of fish that I can catch this time of year.
I also enjoy spending time with family and friends. The transition from Gaspe to Sherbrooke was hard because I was used to this chaotic, loud, and messy lifestyle. When I moved here, I didn't know anyone and noticed the silence in my apartment. However, this has taught me to really appreciate spending time back home with my family. Whether it is watching TV with my mom, driving around with my brother, or going for supper with my dad, all these things matter.
I did have the chance to meet some amazing people at Bishop's. There are two girls, Laurie and Tabatha, that I love spending time with and having conversations with. I also had the chance to meet and work with great people at Doolittle's Co-op.
Upon the completion of my degree at Bishop's University, I would like ideally like to move back to Gaspe. However, there is only one English highschool so the job opportunity might not be there. If not, I would be okay with staying in Sherbrooke for the timebeing, if there are job opportunities that is.
My main professional objective is to learn how to master collaboration in the classroom. I believe that a lot of teachers go to work everyday with the mindset that they control things. While this is true, considering they are an authority figure, I think it is important to understand and reflect on the imput of students. Afterall, it is their education and they are the only ones who knows what works best for them. Therefore, I think the idea of collaboration not only aids students in their education, but also creates strong student-teacher relationships, helps motivation, and makes for a dynamic classroom.
I love animals. When I was little, I told everyone that one day I would be a veterinarian. This dream transferred over to highschool where I had the opportunity to shadow a veterinarian. However, highschool was also the place where I got a reality check. I learned that science wasn't my strong suit, that I actually hate it. Another thing I learned was that getting into vet school was harder than getting into med school considering there are only five vet schools in Canada.
Another thing that made me realize that maybe becoming a veterianarian wasn't for me was when I started working at Felix La Tortue, a pet store. I loved it for the most part, but it made me realize that I didn't love all animals. I am terrified of birds and reptiles which would probably have affected my veterinarian career if I would have tried to pursue that. I did enjoy that job for the mostpart however.
Nonetheless, I still love animals and I am a big advocate for them. Since working at a pet store, I got to expereince first hand the horrors of puppy mills, animal abuse, wild children, and more. I now adovate for banning the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores, encouraging animal shelters and amazing CKC dog breeders, and helping people understand the importance of animal training.
I have a dog, a golden retiever, named Sundae (yes, like the ice cream). Which explains the theme of this website. I also have 3 cats named Purry, Bazou, and Doug. Doug has Down Syndrome but lives a medicine-free, happy, and healthy life.
