General Info

Welcome to the parent-led Code Club at Lila Bringhurst for the school year 2023-2024! Our mission is to provide children aged 9-13 with an enriching coding experience using the materials from Code Club, a renowned global network of free coding clubs. Through step-by-step project guides, we aim to foster a passion for coding and programming among our young participants.

Our club consists of two groups: Scratch and Python. The club's group sessions will take place on campus every Thursday or Friday after school hours, starting on 9/7/2023 and ending on 5/17/2024. We are excited to offer this opportunity free of charge to all interested students. However, for full participation, students must bring their own laptops and obtain parental consent to sign up with their email address for online coding platforms like Scratch, Trinket, or Google Colab*.

After their Code Club experience, students might be interested in taking on new challenges, such as participating in the American Computer Science League (ACSL) or the Congressional App Challenge. The Congressional App Challenge is a district-wide competition organized by the U.S. House of Representatives, inviting middle and high school students to delve into coding and showcase their skills.

Club calendar

Because the students have varying levels of programming knowledge, the code club will be divided into two groups to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment. Each group will be limited to the classroom capacity.

Group 1 - Scratch led by Kevin Lim and Edward Yong: For students who have no coding background, we will have a beginner-friendly teaching approach in this group. Scratch group will meet every Thursday 2:30 - 3:30 pm, starting on 9/7/2023 and ending on 5/16/2024.

Group 2 - Python led by Liga Chen: This group will cater to students who already have some programming experience and are ready to learn Python. Python group will meet every Friday 2:30 - 3:30 pm, starting on 9/8/2023 and ending on 5/17/2024.

Sign-Up

As no staff is available after school hours, the club will be responsible for implementing its own safety measures, which include maintaining a student-parent ratio of 5:1. Additionally, it is required to have at least two parents present to ensure that one of them is available to provide restroom assistance for students. The members are required to sign the liability waiver form during the first club session.

Both coding groups have exceeded the capacity now, so we cannot accept new applications at this time. However, if you are willing to coach Scratch or Python, please let us know. We will help you to contact PTO and form a new coding group for new members. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
