The following are activities that can be used with children to encourage literary engagement!
Book Buddies
Spelling Bee Competitions
Free-Verse Poetry
Hands-on Arts and Crafts
Think of this like trading Pokemon Cards, but with books! Children choose their favorite book and trade it with another student, and they get to bond over the books' subjects and discuss the similarities and differences.
Monthly or seasonal spelling bee competitions in the classroom can assist significantly in reading comprehension because of the students' wills to compete and dedication to learn the words for a prize.
This is a great way for children to be introduced to poetry and create an emotional outlet for their ideas or experiences, which also serves as an introduction to poetry which then can extend outwards to sonnets, epics, or haikus.
These arts and crafts can be based on any book, providing an activity for students to assess the class material and apply it to the activity, actively making connections from the book and the creative process of arts and crafts.
