Next Step Community Church offers a grocery distribution 3 Saturdays a month, serving between 300-400 families each week. Folks are invited to come into the Next Step space to pick out their groceries, and pre-packed bags are also available for disabled community members. Volunteers are needed from 8:00-10:30am on Saturdays to support this ministry.
Volunteers are needed to help with:
Preparing and filling the grocery bags that will be distributed to disabled folks who cannot come into the space to pick out their groceries.
Checking people in when they arrive
Providing hospitality and assisting people with getting their groceries
Offering translation support to our Asian brothers and sisters
Cleaning up of the space afterwards
You have no prior experience
You are passionate about helping with food insecurity in Brooklyn
You speak Mandarin or Cantonese and are willing to provide translation services (not a requirement, but an added bonus!)
You want a mix of behind-the-scenes preparation AND interacting with people during distribution
"No matter how small of a role it is, nothing is insignificant when it comes to serving God"
Here are Janelle's words about her experiences serving with the community grocery pantry
"I found myself wanting to do more with my Saturday mornings and saw RHOW as a way that I could start my weekend off by serving God through serving others. Being with other volunteers helped me to better see faith in action in the community. Although we didn’t spend a lot of time with the members of the community as they picked out their groceries, it was more than enough time to be used as a vessel to spread God’s kindness and love. This serving opportunity served as a great reminder that no matter how small of a role it is, nothing is insignificant when it comes to serving God."
