EDP 6 - Wooden Engineering Challenge - Design Proposal
Name: William Leopold
Design Proposal Directions - As you write up the details of the build, make sure to keep these important rules in mind:
Use detailed technical writing skills (no pronouns)
Include as much detail as needed so that any other person can replicate the process
Include detailed (dimensioned) parts as either engineering drawings and/or 3D images
During Construction/Testing:
Any information that is deleted from the original write up should be highlighted in red and white font.
Changes in the construction section should be highlighted in yellow.
Changes from the evaluation of testing/retesting should be highlighted in blue.
EDP 1 Identify the Purpose
The purpose of this product is to make a box that can hold accessories. Example:charger wallet, keys, and many others.
Tools and Materials Used
Bandsaw
Wood (5 pieces of 6x4./)
Sandpaper
Glue
AutoCAD printing
Finish
Clamps
Popsicle stick
EDP 7 - Detailed Steps of Construction
Develop the design.
Create an AutoCAD printing of design for lines when cutting.
The pieces of soft wood are then measured.
The box will have five 5x5 pieces of the soft wood cut with the miter saw.
Cut the pieces 5.5x5.5 so that there is free space incase of issues in glueing.
Then the pieces will be lined up and glued.
The glue will be spread out evenly in between each piece with a popsicle stick.
Clamps can be used to hold in place while the glue is sticking.
When using the clamps a popsicle stick is put in between the wood in the clamp so that the wood is not damaged by the clamp.
After the glue dries overnight, cut the hanging over pieces of the box so that there is a smooth box shape.
Remove any excess glue from the glueing process.
Next, 1/2 inch will be cut off of the box, and used later when making the knobs.
Next use a thin bandsaw blade to cut out the shape of the box, and have the AutoCAD printing attached to the wood.
Now that the shape is cut out, use a sander to smooth out the shape and fix any errors when using the bandsaw.
Then the 1/2 inch is cut off the back of the box before cutting the drawers.
Next cut out the drawers of the box using the AutoCAD printing with a thin bandsaw blade.
To do this you will have to cut through the side of the box, but this will be glued back together later.
Then cut out a 1/4 inch of the front and back of the drawer.
Cut out the drawer by cutting a rectangular like shape out leaving the sides and the base of the drawer.
Then glue the front and back pieces onto the drawer, and make sure that the glue is spread out on the pieces of the drawer, and let it sit overnight.
Use the clamps to hold it in place.
Steps 13-18 have to be repeated as there are two drawers.
Glue the cuts made in the box to create the drawers to close these cuts. Clamp and allow to dry.
Glue the 1/2 that was cut off on step 12 back to the back of the box.
Use a popsicle stick to spread the glue and let the glue sit overnight.
Use the clamps to hold it in place.
Then sand the drawer sides to smooth and fit better inside the box.
Make the drawer knobs by using the scrap piece from step 9 and cut it to the size of .5x.5.
Then Glue the knobs to the center of the drawers and spread the glue out on the knob's face, and let it sit overnight.
Use the clamps to hold the knobs in place.
Now finishing can be done to make it look better.
