A hazard is a phenomenon or human activity that can cause harm or it is the possibility to be at risk. It becomes a hazard when it has the potential to harm people or can cause property damage, social and economic disruption. The different types of hazards are natural hazards, quasi-natural hazards, and technological or man-made hazards.
Hazard-prone areas are areas that have been marked as being at risk of possible disasters such as floods and vehicular accidents. It is essential that people have enough knowledge and understanding about the hazards in their area as well as how they could mitigate their possible effects. A well-informed citizen is likely to be much safer compared to those who are not. Remember, the damaging effects of hazards can be mitigated only if you are well informed and aware of the situation.
Legend:

We can minimize the effects of hazards through having an emergency escape plan, and by having an awareness regarding the vulnerability or susceptibility of your place.
Hazard maps highlight specific areas that can be affected by or vulnerable to a particular hazard, such as natural calamities and man-made disasters. The map also shows the size of the area that is likely to be affected by various calamities and disasters that may occur. Hazard maps provide people with information about the hazards around their area and describe the areas at risk. Furthermore, the maps are tools used to prevent exposure to some risks and provide information about a place where people can evacuate and ask for help.
