Project Overview

Mother Earth was created beautifully, where nature blooms to have a mesmerizing beauty. It is filled with beautiful living and non-living things, but as humans began to abuse and harm nature, it caused catastrophic effects. Humanity continues to threaten the existence of nature, but nature also knows how to take revenge against humans, which then causes various disasters and hazards. Such phenomena occur drastically without notice, resulting in huge losses and damage not just to humans but also to society. The concept of disaster risk management was then introduced to mitigate the catastrophic effect of such a phenomenon.

A project of the West Visayas State University College of Information and Communications Technology, "Kahandaan ng Komunidad sa Kalamidad: Managing Disaster Risks in Communities Citizen Project," under the National Service Training Program-Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS), has a goal to create a new and effective way to help address gaps and challenges in managing disaster risk. The project also promotes the adoption of ICT and the advancement of technology for community-based disaster management in order to mitigate the damaging effects of various hazards, such as man-made disasters and natural calamities. The project includes the creation of Facebook pages to disseminate information effectively and efficiently and was set up with automated responses and frequently asked questions (FAQs) related to disasters and emergency hotlines, the creation of hazard maps and resource maps, IEC (Information, Education, Communication) material, and a barangay website that contained a barangay profile and relevant information regarding hazards around their areas.

The project has a 6-week duration and was then completed after a signed agreement between the barangay officials of Tagbac Sur, Oton, Iloilo and students from BSIS 1-B of WVSU-CICT. It is then followed by the mapping of the area and the acquisition of barangay data, which are needed for the development of the project. With the help of our community project,  we hope that we can help spread awareness and educate people about managing disaster risk.
