Family engagement leads to a pivotal role in ensuring students’ academic and professional goals are supported. The long-term family engagement plan works to support and enable parents to learn about important information and apply the new skills and mindset to support their child's aspirations. Over a ten-month period, families are offered meaningful opportunities to critically engage in the classroom and the larger school community. Emphasis on relevant topics such as school security, mental health, emotional and physical health, and college and career readiness enables parents to feel comfortable addressing their child's needs and fostering trustworthy teacher-family partnerships that support the child inside and outside school settings. The comprehensive plan details every family opportunity with specific resources targeting the monthly topic. Moreover, communication to families through School Status and Google Classroom streamlines the process and ensures parents are well-informed of upcoming events.
The resources are versatile to meet the needs of our families; especially, in the wake of Covid distancing requirements. The resources are presented online and discussions about applying the information to realistic situations occur through Q&A sessions and whole-group or breakout conversations/activities.
Family engagement is a major challenge in my school. In my first year, I struggled to make consistent communication with my students’ families. One of the major challenges was the lack of parent contact information, which prevented the spread of information. Our parent contact directory is filled with discontinued phone numbers or missing email addresses. In an effort to reach families in 2020-2021, I gathered contact information from letters sent home with students and the recent device distribution log which required parent input of emails and numbers to acquire devices. Using my own contact log, I am able to broadcast information to specific classes about upcoming assignments and reach out regarding common concerns (e.g. missing assignments and attendance). The contact logs supplement the application of my long-term family engagement plan.
My long-term family engagement plan was developed in tandem with the different experiences and knowledge of a small group of educators. We created a comprehensive ten-month long family engagement plan which focused on specific topics with shared relevance to our unique placements. The common themes are backed by research-driven practices conducive to a school environment and are supplemented by visual presentations and applicable activities used to establish a real-world connection.
The core content of the family engagement plan utilizes major themes relevant to my school community. Topics such as school security and student health (i.e. emotional, mental, physical) propagate to families the seriousness in which I pursue cultivating a safe classroom and school environment supportive of their child's needs. For example, the theme for August is School Security with an emphasis on ensuring parents about the number one priority of maintaining a safe and healthy school environment. The long-term plan breaks down into a detailed immediate action-plan and continued progress monitoring throughout the month. August's immediate plan includes an information session on school safety protocols with progress monitoring surveys and the school Facebook page.
The ten-month long family engagement plan is fine-tuned to the specific contextual needs of the Clarksdale community. Covid presents major challenges to conveying information and providing safe, quality instruction. School Status and Facebook provide avenues of communication to my families to alert them about upcoming parent meetings and other opportunities. Through these communication access points, families can access the necessary information needed to navigate online-learning and participate in Q&A sessions to clarify the confusion.
My community faces issues like wifi and device inaccessibility, which raised initial problems for converging to a virtual learning environment. In an effort to ensure student access, I directly reached out via School Status to survey family needs. For example, surveying family wifi and device needs to ensure students are adequately able to engage in an online learning environment. This information supported accurate device and hotspot needs and compare the data in preparation for device distribution. In addition, the conversations helped ease family contentions with the uncertainty of an online learning environment.
Progress in my efforts to develop stronger relationships with my families is steadily improving as I learn what communication method works best. The School Status communication data below highlights the higher use of text messaging instead of calling as the primary form of communication. My emails to parents do not show up on School Status since the majority of the contact logs are missing parent emails, so I collected these from various sources and organized emails under a google contact grouping instead. Other parent contacts take place through the Google Classroom automated parent messaging system where parents opt-in to receive updates on academic assignments and weekly class announcements.
The progress made since the beginning of the year reflects the communication preferences of my parents. Some prefer regular updates while others are more comfortable with receiving the Google Classroom updates. The use of technology makes it possible to promote multiple modes of communication to support the needs of my parents. Especially, as many of my parents work beyond the standard 9 to 5 shift and require flexible communication options to remain updated on their student's progress. School Status, Calendly, and Google Classroom make this communication accessible to all families without the complications of missed calls or conflicting schedules.
The long-term family engagement plan highlights a collection of quality resources to engage parents about relevant student themes. Using technology to enhance communication access, I am able to inform families about scheduled events and much-needed information to support online learning. The multiple avenues of communication through School Status functionality (i.e. phone, email, messaging) offer versatility for my parents’ preferred communication method. More importantly, through consistent contact, parents are more aware of their student’s performance and current standings in the class. This has developed my relationships with parents by reinforcing a two-way line of communication which provides insight into my student’s wellbeing and vice versa.
