We are a mental health initiative, working to raise awareness about mental health, especially in athletes, in Newfoundland and Labrador. Mental health is often forgotten about in sport, while physical health is pushed to the forefront. We know mental health is just as important as physical health! Up to 35% of athletes suffer from a mental health crisis which may manifest as stress, eating disorders, burnout, or depression and anxiety. We hope to start conversations around mental health, especially in sport, to create more positive, supportive and welcoming environments!

Maddy had a niche for hockey, and she quickly excelled playing for KVMHA, AAA, prep school (RNS) and even represented Team Atlantic. She also played soccer, rugby and volleyball.
Maddy developed severe Tourette’s at the age of 14 with no explanation, this was the start of her first long battle with depression. After the years of therapy and countless visits to alternative care, things seem to be going so much better. Maddy attended UNBSJ in pursuit of her Arts Degree, we all know she wanted to go to University to keep playing the sports she loved.
On Sept 12, 2019 Maddy Murphy thought the best way to ease her pain was to take her own life, and unfortunately succeeded in her final task. Maddy’s story needs to be told. To read more on Maddy and MM81, check our their website!
