What is Vampire the Masquerade?
Vampire the Masquerade (VtM) is the gothic lovechild between Dungeons & Dragons and improvisational theatre. VtM is a LARP (Live Action Role Play), meaning that participants embody the character they create, portraying that character's motivations, mannerisms, and movements in a room with other players. By using a combination of dice rolls, character sheets, and rulebooks, a Storyteller (ST) guides the scene, providing a narrative for players to interact with and a world to explore. However, it is through the players' cooperation, competition, and Machiavellian schemes that the plot truly unfolds, allowing players to be in charge of the direction and mood of the world. Costumes are not required, though they can help players portray their characters.
Though vampires are traditionally stereotyped as "gothic", characters in VtM can be anything the player desires. You are given the change to explore the life of someone similar to or completely different from yourself. A character can have any profession, backstory, race, gender, ideology, etc. Characters can grapple with their newfound state of undeath, hunt for prey among the living, or climbs the ranks of vampiric society. Working with the ST can help bring your character to life, and working with other players can cement them within the world. New players are also encouraged to discuss boundaries with the ST so that the game remains safe and respectful for everyone involved.
Our game is set in an alternate version of Champaign-Urbana. All of the iconic buildings in this area -- including University buildings, restaurants, and yes, even KAMS -- exist in the VtM world. However, once night falls, the city you are familiar with begins to feel increasingly off. You double-check that your apartment is locked, just in case. The shadows are longer, and darker, and sometimes you wonder if they're listening. Students on Green Street aren't just students, they're your next meal, and you struggle to remember what it felt like to be a human, too. Your character can explore alternate CU, control property within the area, and even visit buildings that don't exist in our CU. Characters are also able to interact with surrounding cities, such as Milwaukee and Chicago, which come with their own lore and mysteries. Your character can explore alternate CU, control property within the area, and build entirely new locations? In VtM anything is possible let your imagination run wild.
