The style – Wild expression

Branko’s painting style and technique were created without any direct model or framework. Branko’s art is characterized by raw and wild expression without compromise, which is a direct reflection of his character and a product of personal experience; the experience being something that really happened or simply reflection on the art of music, literature or film. His paintings narrate stories experienced from a personal perspective filled with intricacy and detail. The transparent motifs of his paintings are synergistic with surrounding symbols and would be incomplete without it. Only by reading these symbols, and seemingly separate motifs, we can understand the complete work and its intricacies.

The motif of the painting is usually complemented by techniques of drawing and graphic design, which in turn form one artistic whole.

The typical oil on canvas which is generous with space reaches dimensions of over 2 meters, and serves to facilitate the expression of the whole idea. Another characteristic of Branko’s energy and recognizable style, is that all canvas and frames are unique in that they are produced by him.

Aikido – painter samurai

His fighting spirit and love for sport, as well as philosophy, attracted him to aikido, in which he has a black belt. Even today, he continually practices aikido in leisure time, and his readiness and skill are comparable to those who are much younger than him. His passion for Aikido left a noticeable trace in his paintings, as a reflection of life and philosophy. Here, we have a “Samurai” (from 1991, oil on canvas), but also numerous drawings and graphics; a signet with two samurais and a poster made for his aikido classes.

The professor of art

Finding it difficult to succeed in the painting trade, Branko started to work in a primary school in Borca and Padinska skela (two districts of Belgrade), and taught children with special needs. The painting called “The Specialists” (1988) was dedicated to them and donated to the school, however, was later stolen. Till this day it is unknown how the painting had disappeared. He was loved by his students and it is through them that his anecdotes are retold. He stays remembered till this day where these students still greet him on the street.

For the 600th anniversary since the Battle of Kosovo (1389) he had painted a large mural (13 x 7m) in 1989 on the wall in the school of “Stevan Sremac” in Borca. He had finished it in just two days, working on scaffolds without a previously prepared sketch. The style of the painting was not at all simple and sterile; on the contrary, it was enriched by graffiti in combination of drafts made by students of the school. Many generations had been growing up next to Branko’s mural “Kosovski boj” until it was destroyed during the renovation of the school and lost forever.

One year before, in 1988, Branko painted one more painting with the motif from our national history – “Marko and Musa”. Serbian epic poems had a great influence on Branko ever since his childhood, when his father Ivan Dimic (1921-2004, professor of French language and literature at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Philology) used to read to him. In this way, he conveyed his love for Serbian epic poetry.
