Even if we imagine a world in which machines can produce accurate real-time translations, there are many of great reasons to learn more than one language.
First, there are cognitive and social benefits of multilingualism, ranging from improved critical thinking to warding off dementia. Learning other languages also frequently goes together with learning about another cultural, which is important in our increasingly globalized society.
Second, even with advances in automated translation, many people prefer unmediated face-to-face interaction. Bilingual or multilingual people will likely still have advantages over monolingual people, for example in getting jobs, making sales, and building strong relationships.
Finally, there are around 7,000 different languages spoken in the world today, and we currently have automated translation software for only a fraction of these. Until we have truly language-independent automated translation, it is still essential that people study and speak these languages. These languages, in turn, will help inform linguistic theory and test the limits of language independence in machine translation.

The proposal of Reshef et. al. (“MIC”) is an interesting new approach for discovering non-linear dependencies among pairs of measurements in exploratory data mining. However, it has a potentially serious drawback. The authors laud the fact that MIC has no preference for some alternatives over others, but as the authors know, there is no free lunch in Statistics: tests which strive to have high power against all alternatives can have low power in many important situations.
