Moderate alcohol consumption does no harm to the brain, the relaxing effect on the blood vessels could even be beneficial. However, when a limit drawn by a cohort study in Neurology (Online) for men with 36 grams of alcohol a day is exceeded, there is a decline in cognitive performance with age
The study is based on data from the Whitehall II cohort, a group of around 5,054 male and 2,100 female government employees from the London administrative district of the same name, who had been asked about their drinking habits three times over a period of ten years. The participants were later subjected to multiple cognitive tests, which Séverine Sabia of University College London now relates to early alcohol consumption.
In men, the top category of alcohol consumption was significantly associated with poorer performance in the memory test, and executive functions (acting sensibly) also tended to be reduced. According to Sabia, the effect size corresponds to accelerated aging by 5.7 years for memory performance and 1.5 years for executive functions.
The top category started with a consumption of 36 grams of pure alcohol per day. This limit is already reached with three beers in the evening (330 ml with 4.8 percent by volume contain 12.7 grams of alcohol). According to the study, anyone who drinks less than 20 grams of alcohol a day can hope for the same cognitive performance as people who are abstinent.
Female government employees in the Whitehall cohort drank significantly less than their male counterparts. The top category started at 19 grams of alcohol a day. The consequences were less than with men. For the executive functions only, Sabia determined an accelerated aging of 2.4 years. However, the association was not significant. In both sexes, spirits were more harmful than beer or wine.
The study was unable to determine the reasons for the negative effects on brain function. An obvious assumption is neurotoxic damage from excessive drinking. Unfortunately, the participants were not asked in detail about this. One of the restrictions is that the employees have assessed the alcohol consumption themselves. If you indicated your drinking quantity too low, the limit value would have to be lowered accordingly
