Reflecting on my Global Learning journey, the opportunities I experienced at FIU have shaped my growth and have given me a purpose to continue learning and pursue a career with a global perspective.
My courses and travels taught be to be more aware of what goes on in the world regarding global issues. For example, the area studies courses I took as part of the FLAS Fellowship increased my knowledge of the issues that immigrants face, as well as the Latin American and Caribbean region in general. I enjoyed taking these courses for my own general knowledge and to prepare for a career with a global perspective.
My life experience and college career have helped me understand the importance of adapting to diverse cultural contexts and communicating with people from around the world. An example of this was during the study abroad in Japan where I did not speak the language but found ways to communicate with the local people. Although this was challenging, I learned about my own capabilities. The opportunity to participate in the study abroad program gave me real-life opportunities to complement my studies. I experienced differences in the way people interact with each other and similarities in the general way of life. It greatly expanded my worldview and helped me appreciate that were new to me. I was inspired by the harmony in Japanese life which made me want to integrate more balance into my daily routines.
Focusing on language and cultural studies have shown me the importance of how history, customs, and cultures give us a better of understanding of other points of view and ways of life. For example, learning about the Haitian diaspora in the U.S. taught me how essential this support is for the people living in Haiti. This type of country and cultural information must be considered in policy-making to make decisions that are respectful to the people they impact.
The Global Learning offerings at FIU are extensive, there is something for everyone. From the Tuesday Times Roundtables to events like documentary films and visits from global leaders, students have incredible opportunities to learn about local and international topics. These types of opportunities are transformational for students and have strengthened my desire to be more engaged.
I plan to continue developing my skills and insights through the FIU Master of Arts in Global Affairs program, which I will be starting this Fall. My Global Learning experiences have not only helped me grow personally and inspired me to continue learning, but are helping me achieve my goals and set me up for success for a career in the global arena.
