As an undergraduate student at FIU, I participated in several activities with a global perspective, as well as attended discussions where I learned about local and worldwide issues.Â
I volunteered for campus activities including helping with the Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society, cleaning up the FIU nature preserve, and assisting new students moving into the dorms. I enjoyed interacting with FIU's diverse student population and found the volunteer activities to be rewarding experiences.
I served as Treasurer and participated as a member of the FIU French Honor Society and FIU French Club. We organized several campus events on French topics, such as French trivia and a roundtable discussion on the Notre Dame Cathedral reconstruction in Paris.
I participated in events and discussions such as the weekly FIU Tuesday Times Roundtable (TTR), where I learned about topics impacting communities, locally and globally.
Some of the events that stood out for me were:
Attending the presentation on the film, "Women of the Watershed", which told the story of how women have helped conserve the Florida Everglades. It was interesting to learn about the journey of the filmmaker and the decisions made over the past several decades that had an impact on the local people.
Attending the visit from President Milei of Argentina, with my classmates and professor from the Diplomacy Lab.
This event was interesting for me to be able to hear and see a president in person.
Attending the visit from the Ambassador of France in Haiti, Ambassador Fabrice Mauries.
Through my studies at FIU, I have learned about the shared history of France and Haiti. The Ambassador spoke about the current situation in Haiti. Audience members asked important questions that reflected the challenges Haiti is facing and what the expectations are from France to assist. This was an interesting dynamic for me to see global relations in action up close.
