The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), was established in 1994. Situated on the banks of the river Brahmaputra, IITG is one of the premier institutes of India. Currently, the institute has 5 schools, 11 department and 7 interdisciplinary academic centres and offers BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc, MBA and PhD programs. The institute has been ranked overall 395 in the QS world university rankings 2022 and 41 in the Research Citations per Faculty category.

The Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering was established in 2002 and offers BTech, MTech and PhD programs. The department has 37 faculty members who specialize in fields like Biophysics, Biochemical Engineering, Tissue Engineering, Plant Biotechnology, Nano Biotechnology, Enzyme and Microbial Technology, Computational Biology and Proteomics.

The student chapter of IIT Guwahati, under the biophysical society is a student organization that have been established to promote research in the field of biophysics through various activities organized by students. These activities not only enable students to develop interest in biophysics, but would also help them to improve their management and communication skills.
