The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), is a 3,000-mile navigable route stretching from Massachusetts down to Florida and along the Gulf of Mexico. It consists of natural sounds, bays, rivers, and man-made canals, providing a sheltered route for boaters to avoid the open ocean.
Known specifically as the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AICW), it connects the Northeast through Florida, passing through coastal waterways, inlets, and estuaries.
Developed to offer a safe "inland highway" for commercial and recreational vessels.
It connects various bodies of water including the Chesapeake Bay, Albemarle Sound, and Florida's Indian River Lagoon.
The waterway includes crucial canals like the Cape Cod Canal, Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, and the Chesapeake-Albemarle Canal.
