Boya Xu
I am an Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech.
My research examines digital content strategy, platform design, and the economics of emerging technologies. Specifically, I study: (1) how social media publicity affects the adoption of innovations, including green food technologies; (2) the dynamics of the creator economy, such as influencers’ production of controversial content and grassroots framing of financial expectations; and (3) how interactions among algorithmic components shape bias in online personalization. Methodologically, I employ a range of methods, including econometrics, online experiments, and unstructured data analytics, to examine how multimodal content and platform design drive consumer behavior and business outcomes.
Before joining Virginia Tech, I earned my BS in Statistics from Zhejiang University and my MA in Economics and Ph.D. in Marketing from Duke University.
Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, playing table tennis and squash, and exploring architecture.
