When I joined Atlanta Housing as its first Archivist in 2014, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Fred Parker, who was transitioning into the position of Director of Records and Information Management. From our first meeting, I was struck by Fred's impeccable dress, thoughtful communication, and ease in interacting with others. My initial impressions of him were overwhelmingly positive. I admired his compassionate nature, his innate leadership abilities, his empathy for others, and his commitment to learning new things and performing his work with excellence.
Although Fred had no prior experience in archives, historical records, or records management, he fully immersed himself in the work and quickly became proficient in the professional jargon. He recognized the importance of preserving the history of Atlanta Housing's communities, which was also his personal history, having grown up in Bowen Homes. When I learned of his connection to Bowen Homes, I knew I had to document his story.
Fred's leadership skills and reputation earned him immense respect from my team and colleagues. They were thrilled when they learned that Fred's oral history would be included in the virtual exhibit on Bowen Homes. Thanks to Ijumo Hayward, Shantel Grant, Tara Johnson, Kym Lofton, and others who edited the transcription of his oral history, Fred's story was eloquently captured.
Over the years, Fred and I developed a strong working relationship. He was always available to offer professional advice and personal guidance. His collaborative, caring nature made him a natural leader who served all the communities and people he encountered. It is therefore with great honor and respect that this exhibit is dedicated to Fred Parker and the community of Bowen Homes.
