The Group

The Bouwman Research Group. Missing from the picture is Jerry Kamer.

Laura Denton (Graduate research assistant at CU Boulder)

Laura received her BSc degree in chemistry from the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs) and joined the group in November of 2023. She will be working on various topics such as the detectability of N-bearing molecules on the icy moon Europa (our NASA project) and in the future she will be working on studying chemistry and spectroscopy on our future molecular beam system

Devner Talley (Graduate research assistant at CU Boulder)

Denver received his undergraduate degree from Trinity University in San Antonio TX where he worked with CU Boulder alumnus professor Becky Rapf.  He joined the Bouwman group in the fall of 2023. Denver is constructing an ion trap time of flight mass spectrometer for studying the photochemistry of interstellar organic molecules.

Henry Cardwell (Graduate research assistant at CU Boulder)

Henry joined the group in November of 2022 and will be working on various projects, ranging from isomerization and dissociation of nitrogen-bearing hydrocarbons to studying the detectability of N-bearing molecules on the icy moon Europa. The latter projects involve a collaboration with Bernd Abel (University of Leipzig) and Zoltan Sternovsky (CU Boulder Aerospace Engineering / LASP).  In our "spare time" , Henry and myself will be constructing an ion trap time of flight mass spectrometer for lab-based investigations of the photodissociation of aromatic molecules.

Rory McClish (Graduate research assistant at CU Boulder)

Rory joined the group in May of 2023.  He will be performing measurements on the formation of nitrogen-bearing hydrocarbons in the interstellar medium at the Swiss Light Source. The measurements will be complemented with electronic structure calculations to rationalize detected product species and identify chemical pathways.

Jerry Kamer (Graduate student at Leiden University)

Jerry Kamer started as a PhD student at Leiden University on September first 2021.  After spending a BSc research project with us in 2018 on the light induced dissociation of coronene cations, he decided to pursue his masters degree in the field of quantum physics at Delft University, which he successfully finished in 2021. Jerry will perform his PhD studies on the formation, dissociation and characterization of aromatic molecules in the Solar System and in interstellar environments.

Madison (Madie) Patch (Undergraduate research assistant at CU Boulder)

Madie joined us in August of 2023 on a UROP position that I was allowed to create as part of the UROP mentorship award that I won.  Madie analyzes the infrared spectra of the mono- and didehydrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon species. Spectra were recorded by means of cryogenic ion trap predissociation spectroscopy and the spectra show that unique product species are formed.

Caitlyn Staudenmier (Undergraduate research assistant at CU Boulder)

Caitlyn joined the group in September of 2022 and she will continue the work initiated by our former UROP student Jackson Cahn by performing a computational chemistry study of the formation of complex hydrocarbons under dense molecular cloud conditions. The study will support the analysis of synchrotron data and will be conducted in close collaboration with Dr. Domenik Schleier at Leiden University.
