Serve as an ambassador for literary translation in the College and University. Because of the special relationship between COH and ALTA, graduate students in the College have the special opportunity to acquire non-profit arts-management skills and serve the mission of an international literary organization.
Assist with preparations for the 2024 ALTA Conference, “ALTA47: Voices in Translation,” which will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from October 25-28, 2024. Duties in advance of the conference will include collecting information from attendees, preparing conference materials, etc. Duties at the conference will include staffing the registration table, answering questions from attendees, assisting with sponsored events, etc.
Organize two rounds of small group multilingual translation workshops on Zoom, including coordinating with instructors, setting up the event portal, answering inquiries from participants, conducting follow-up surveys, etc.
Organize two rounds of editor-translator pitch sessions on Zoom, including coordinating with editors, setting up the event portal, answering inquiries from participants, conducting follow-up surveys, etc.
Vet eligibility of applications submitted for the Emerging Translator Mentorship Program, as well as books submitted for ALTA’s translation awards (National Translation Awards, Italian Prose in Translation Award, Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize, First Translation Award, and Spain-USA Foundation Translation Award).
Collect and manage data; including from award submissions, fellowship and mentorship applications, and conference presenters.
Type, review, and properly format materials such as newsletter copy, reports, correspondence, and forms.
Lecturing SPAN 205, SPAN 206, SPAN 251 Intensive Spanish courses in Univeristy Issaac Newton (Liberia, Costa Rica).
Recruitment activities.
Enrollment of students in the correct courses and Maintaining the corresponding listserv
of students.
Managing reports of students’ travel itineraries, approved courses, and copies of passports.
Help organize at least one information session about the Program per semester
Plan and carry out trips for students enrolled in the program.
Day-to-day activities during the program including help to staff the office.
Offer tutoring sessions when necessary.
Coordination of all Instructors and Graduate Teaching Assistants in SPAN 101.
Curriculum and Assessment material development.
Leadership of Workshops on Assessment and Classroom Technological literacy.
Vista Higher Learning Faculty Specialist.
Co-teaching is done in cooperation with the SLAT Chair and with another student. In addition to welcoming the new cohort of SLAT Majors and Minors and creating a community for the students, Co-teachers primarily:
facilitate the two-week unit on their SLAT major topic.
contributing to a reading list for their SLAT major area for the course,
presenting to the class 1-2 times on the topic,
providing feedback (on a rubric) about student participation and engagement with the
readings during class (and online),
scheduling a UA faculty presenter for both weeks,
developing writing prompts for the Short Paper for the unit, and
providing content feedback on the Short Paper for the students.
