Session Title:  Embracing Identity: Why Culturally Relevant Literature Matters in Schools

Session Description:  When books in a school library are primarily by white authors, the message they are sending to Black, Latino, Asian and Native American students is crystal clear: Your voice is not important, your experience does not matter. At the same time, when white kids only see books about white authors and the white experience, they can get the sense the whiteness is more important. In order to build communities, school libraries and classrooms need to represent every student who steps into them. Books bring people and cultures together. When students see a diverse collection of books in their libraries and in their classrooms, it builds communities, it teaches all students and teachers to have empathy and it helps all students in that school feel seen. A culturally diverse library should be the norm and expected in all schools. This presentation will demonstrate and discuss the impact of diverse collections.
