Conditions

  • Although this is a District event, the magnitude and nature of the Challenge makes it imperative that each Troop retains active responsibility for the safety and participation of its Scouts. A leader from each participating troop must be in attendance at all times during the event and will be required to assist in running the event. This may include manning a safety point on/in the river. The positions will be advised prior to the event. Wear appropriate clothing.
  • The Safety team (which includes seconded leaders), who will be patrolling the course in Kayaks and along the banks, have the right to force the withdrawal of a patrol if the raft becomes unsafe or if the behavior of the patrol is not appropriate.
  • All Scouts must appreciate this is not just a race!! It is a journey. The fastest raft is not necessarily the winner.

First Aid

  • There will be first aid personnel on site throughout the event and will be contactable by mobile phone. A list of mobile numbers will be available at the commencement of the race.

Judging

  • The winning Patrol will be awarded the Boroondara Challenge Shield. Other categories will also receive a trophy – e.g. best raft, best decorated raft and/or crew.

This event is not assessed on time alone!! It is not a race. Judging will be by a combination of the following:

  1. The preliminary safety check of the crew,
  2. The quality of the construction – knots, traditional construction using spars and rope lashings will earn more credit,
  3. The decoration - razzle dazzle, imagination added to the raft and the crew to make them stand out,
  4. Remember the theme – 2018 Creepy Crawlies.
  5. Elapsed time,
  6. Satisfactory negotiation of slalom gates, obstacle course tasks and observation.
