Summary: this paper looks at the cross-linguistic frequency and learnability of types of syntagmatic splits of different degrees of semantic naturalness. It finds than more natural patterns are both more frequent cross-linguistically, and more learnable in artificial language learning experiments, and are so in a gradient rather than a dichotomic way.
