Carley Fisher-Maltese (author) is an associate professor at George Mason University where she teaches in the inclusive early childhood education program. Her research interests are focused on student learning and math and science teacher preparation. She also works for Fairfax County Public Schools as a K-6 STEAM teacher. She is passionate about nature-based learning, protecting pollinators, and engaging students through innovative technologies.

Arina
Arina Pavlenko (illustrator) is a Willow Springs alumna. She is a former member of the garden after-school club and, with her mom, ran the Willow Springs farmer's market for one year. She is a talented, young artist (currently a rising eighth grader). She still volunteers during garden club, when she's not busy doing theater or spending time with friends, helping younger students with garden-related art projects.

Willow Springs has had a school garden for many years. It is supported by the PTA and volunteers, and loved by the students.
Farmer's Market
Farmer's Market
During the fall and spring, students and family helpers sell produce from a local, family-owned farm and from the school garden, at an after-school farmer's market. It helps the students learn about where their food comes from.
Bluebird Trail
Bluebird Trail
The bluebird trail is comprised of five nest boxes around the school grounds. Students help the STEAM teacher and garden leaders monitor the nest boxes for nests, eggs, and baby birds.
