The Garden at School is a passion project for author, Carley Fisher-Maltese. The idea of the book was conceived after over 20 years working with and around school gardens. Carley has a strong belief in the power of garden-based learning for educators, learners, and their communities. She has seen it firsthand and is driven by a desire to make learning gardens accessible to all children and their families.
Carley and Arina first met at Willow Springs Elementary School where Carley is a STEAM teacher and afterschool garden club leader and Arina was an elementary school student. Arina is now a rising eighth grader, but she still volunteers at the garden club when she can and helps younger students with nature-based art projects. Carley is going on her eighth year as garden club leader at Willow Springs and started another school garden previously when she was a teacher at Dutch Neck Elementary School in New Jersey. She also teaches at George Mason University in the Inclusive Early Childhood Education program where she shares her expertise about gardens as teaching tools with her teacher candidates in her math and science methods courses.
